All pre-1998 American cars with hood or trunk lights are likely to have mercury lighting switches, several models have them up to 2001 and many foreign models have them also. Just call or stop by and we will be glad to verify if your vehicle has a mercury switch.
You may be well aware of the danger from mercury contamination but here is our concern: each mercury switch contains one gram of mercury, most cars have two switches. One gram of mercury is enough to contaminate a twenty-acre lake. Now that´s toxic. Currently mercury is released into the atmosphere during the metal scrapping process. The only way to stop mercury contamination is to remove the switches and dispose of them properly.
Thankfully there is now a program in force that will allow auto owners to have their mercury switches changed out with environmen-tally friendly ball bearing switches free.
This program was developed by NATA (NW Automotive Trades Assn.), OEC (Oregon Environmental Council) and DEQ (Dept. of Environmental Quality). Program packets containing all necessary information for identifying mercury switches and replacing them were sent out to all voluntarily participating NATA auto and collision repair shops. The new environmentally friendly switches and safe containers for the removed mercury switches were also supplied to the shops.
This program should remove at least one hundred pounds of toxic mercury from automobiles, one gram at a time.
